Makten Över Musiken is a mentorship program for the advancement of women in the music industry. It was initiated by the Stockholm based culture association Fritz’s Corner in 2012. The project is made possible by funds from Postkodslotteriets Kulturstiftelse. We also receive great support from Stockholms Stad, Nalen and Inkonst.
Fritz’s Corner concluded a report in 2012 on who’s who and especially who does what in the Swedish music industry. The result showed that around 80% of leading and creative positions were held by men – A&R’s, CEO’s, agents, managers, you name it. All positions deciding who to sign and who to book were held predominantly by males. This, in effect, means that males are overrepresented when it comes to positions that are essentially responsible for which artists get a chance to create the music that gets made. That is a problem and that is why we thought it would be good idea to give young women the extra push to advance in their careers. We believe that the competence is there – all they need is the necessary priority and tools.
When you apply to our program you should have at least one year of music industry work experience. It is preferable that you have set career goals and a clear vision to what you want to accomplish. 15-20 adepts are each assigned a mentor for one year. Adepts meet their mentor at least once a month to discuss general reflections, challenges and career strategies to achieve set goals.
In order to provide further inspiration and increased transfer of knowledge we also offer a public program including seminars on gender equality, motivational talks and workshops on key marketing aspects. For our fourth year we´re trying to extend the seminar program to 1 seminar/month. We also offer a basic workshop on technical questions for live performances (practical stuff like how to rig up on stage and how to read a band’s rider properly…) These are questions that can arise in all areas of the industry and to which males predominantly hold the answers. We also wish to extend the seminars to general knowledge of the industry, including business affairs and economic aspects. All seminars are public and open to everyone except the technical workshop which is only for women. Some seminars directly related to the program are held exclusively for the adepts and mentors of that year.
Makten Över Musiken recently launched a Leadership Program for 5 senior adepts who have worked in the music industry for several years and would themselves qualify for mentorship duties in the original program. The CEOs are all from major companies: Universal Music Sweden, Live Nation Nordics and Sony/ATV Music Publishing. These senior adepts also go through a three-day Leadership Course.
After completing our programs the adepts retain running access to mentorship coaches that can answer questions, give support and provide direction.
The aim of Makten Över Musiken is to make the music business more equal. This is a subsidiary goal to the overall purpose of a more inclusive music industry; hopefully creating a healthier, more profitable business and cultural life that is accessible and appealing to an ever wider audience.
Makten Över Musiken is owned by Fritz’s Corner. We have a project manager which are in charge of the project together with a committee of five other mentors and representatives from Fritz’s Corner. The administration is handled by Fritz’s Corner together with the project management.
